Stay Active at Every Age: How to Build a Movement Plan You Can Keep

Being active is among the most powerful things you can do for your health, whether you are in your twenties or enjoying retirement. Movement strengthens your heart and bones, steadies blood sugar, lifts your mood and helps protect your memory. The secret to lasting results is not a punishing workout but a movement plan that feels doable and fits the life you already live.

Mix the right types of movement

A well-rounded plan blends aerobic activity such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming with muscle-strengthening work like resistance bands, light weights or body-weight exercises. Add stretching and balance practice, such as yoga or tai chi, to keep joints flexible and reduce the risk of falls as you get older.

Start where you are

If you have been inactive for a while, begin with short, gentle sessions and build up slowly. A walk around the block after dinner or a few stretches in the morning is a perfect start. Listen to your body, warm up before exercise and cool down afterwards. Mild muscle soreness is normal, but sharp pain is a signal to stop and check in with your doctor.

Make it part of your routine

Plan activity into your week just as you would an appointment. Walk or cycle for short trips, take the stairs, stand up and stretch during long periods of sitting and invite a friend or family member to join you. When movement is social and enjoyable, it becomes a habit rather than a chore.

The best exercise plan is the one you enjoy enough to keep doing, week after week.

Simple ways to move more every day

Pick a few ideas and build from there:

  • Take a brisk walk after meals
  • Stretch while the kettle boils
  • Try a beginner yoga or dance class
  • Use resistance bands while watching TV
  • Choose stairs instead of the elevator
